Lurid early summer Boletus

The lurid boletus - which can grow quite large, the cap up to 20cm !

There are two forms of this mushroom - the Lurid - B. Luridus and, a similar mushroom the B. luridiformis previously called - B. erythropus.

The mushroom when cut has lemon flesh and yellow/greentubes which quickly discolour to blue when cut. B. Luridus has a red line between the flesh and the tubes.

It is edible when cooked...but I think it wouldn't add much to the dining experience.

Colorful Boletus

These are quite a difficult group to identify and include the Iodine, Scarletina, and Bitter boletus to name just three. The flesh can change colour when cut and this can be diagnostic.

This specimen shows a blackened base when cut and so is an Iodine Boletus
